What are bonds? We’re glad you asked! Hair is made up of different types of bonds that impact the strength and elasticity of our hair. These bonds can be broken by environmental stressors, heat, manipulation, chemical treatments, etc. This is also known as damage, which can lead to a mane that looks dull, brittle, frizzy, and unmanageable.

We’re going to let you know some causes of hair damage and easy steps to take to avoid them.

environmental stressors

Exposure to the sun can actually damage the outside layer of the hair, known as the cuticle. ‘“Sun damage can come in the forms of discoloration, dry and brittle strands, broken or split ends, thinning and frizziness,” says Dr. Bergfeld, a dermatologist. “Damaged hair has a dry look and feel, is unmanageable and won’t hold a curl or style. Damaged hair usually dries quickly, too.” ‘

To prevent this, reach for our vault color-lock leave-in conditioner. This color-locking mist is a leave-in conditioner that instantly detangles, softens, protects vibrancy, and keeps color from fading.

It contains:

UV absorber - uses small molecule size for higher efficacy and is famous for protecting benefits that can preserve color and prevent fading caused by sun exposure (UV-B damage).

Sodium Cocoyl Amino Acids (Amino Acid Complex) - the building blocks of protein, which help to provide shine and smoothness for a healthier look and feel.

wet hair

If you didn’t already know, your hair is at its most vulnerable to damage and breakage when it’s wet. Try using a wide tooth comb to avoid any pulling. We even suggest detangling your hair before getting in the shower, making it easier to manage in the shower.

Towel drying can also often lead to breakage and tangling, because your hair is most vulnerable when wet. Instead, opt for a microfiber towel or a t-shirt that would be gentler on your hair.

everyday heat

If you regularly heat style your hair, you have probably experienced damage. This can come from ANY form of heat you use:

blow dryer

styler

curling iron

beach waver

straightening brush

blow dryer brush

The limit truly does not exist here. It’s crucial to give your hair some form of heat protectant (like the shield anti-humidity spray or the wizard detangling primer) to prevent damage. We also suggest you put those hot tools down once in a while to allow your hair to flourish.

chemical treatments

This category encompasses so many things:

color

bleaching

Keratin treatments

highlights

lowlights

vivid color

A lot of the time, these are the treatments or services that make our friends feel the most unique and in charge of their look, and we’re all here for it; just know that you may have to work a little hard to maintain the health of your hair.
