You may (or may not) know that a healthy scalp is key to growing (and maintaining) a healthy mane, no matter what the hair type. Much like the skin on your face, it’s important to give your scalp some TLC to avoid things like clogged pores, dryness, and other irritations.

So, exactly how does having a healthy scalp lead to good looking hair? Each strand of your hair grows from an individual follicle that produces sebum, or oil. While the amount of sebum can vary from person to person, one thing that remains the same among all people is that both the follicle and scalp must remain clean and clear in order for hair to grow. A hair follicle that has too much sebum or is blocked by dead skin (i.e. dandruff) not only effects the growth of the hair, but also might result in hair not growing in at all. Yikes!

Here are four easy ways you can achieve the healthiest scalp – and, by default the best looking hair! – ever:

    1. Detox like a champ. The reset pink charcoal scalp cleansing oil was created specifically for a scalp detox. Used pre-shampoo, apply this oil directly to the scalp and gently massage to create a fun, tingly (thanks Menthol!) foam that instantly draws out dirt and product build-up. Good-for-scalp ingredients such as Indian Cress, French Pink Clay, Charcoal, and Sunflower Oil absorbs toxins, dirt and grime while promoting oxygen flow for a balanced, healthy scalp. Sea Buckthorn Oil adds moisture and antioxidants back into the scalp making this cleansing gel the easiest way to add a weekly in-shower detox session into your haircare regimen.
    2. Don’t forget to exfoliate. Just like the skin on your body and face, the scalp area needs a little extra scrub action every now and again, too. One of the easiest ways to exfoliate your scalp is to use the reset exfoliating jelly shampoo. Perfect for all hair types, this shampoo contains: salicylic acid to gently exfoliate the scalp; pink clay and charcoal to absorb dirt, bad smells and other weird things that can accumulate onto the scalp; Sea Salt for essential minerals and calcium; and Indian Cress for an additional shot of vitamins and antioxidants. Just like the skin on your face, it’s important to also be gentle when exfoliating the scalp. Never use your fingernails or other harsh items that might be abrasive to the scalp.
    3. Conditioner isn’t the enemy. While it makes sense to believe that weighing hair down with conditioner isn’t a good look (especially if strands are fine), applying it to the scalp every now and again can be a good thing. The scalp (much like the face) benefits from the hydration. Try using the normcore signature conditioner – which is loaded with beneficial moisturizing ingredients like shea butter – and massage into the scalp for an indulgent treat.
    4. Rethink your diet. In addition to the above, one of the best ways to maintain a healthy scalp is through the foods you eat daily. Try to inject your diet with foods such as eggs, spinach, avocados, sweet potatoes and berries. Omega-3 fatty acids (found in fish such as salmon) have also been linked to healthy scalps and hair growth. It's also delicious, *chef's kiss*.
