what if your most voluminous, big-bodied hair was just a handful of products and easy-to-achieve steps away? oftentimes it feels like hair that’s full, blown-out, textured and hitting all the high notes is just a gift some people are blessed with from the hair gods. we’re here to share the good news that big, tousled tresses are usually the result of a few handy hair tricks and reliable products. since we’re going big on all things volume, we tapped Eric Vaughn, one of the members of our amika stylist collective, a hand-selected team of professional stylists who educate and represent amika’s community of hairdressers, to share his expertise and tips on achieving your most voluminous mane yet.

let's get into it!

in this article:

the big hair breakdown

  1. the recipe for fuller hair starts in the shower. first, wash and condition strands with big hit volumizing shampoo and conditioner, our new wash care duo that takes flat hair to full and voluminous and is clinically proven to deliver 2.3x more volume.*
  2. next, apply soulfood nourishing mask to give your hair a burst of hydration, vitamins, and nutrients. leave on for 5-7 minutes, then rinse.
  3. follow it up with the hair blow dry brush to give yourself a bouncy blowout with 2x the shine.**
  4. use a heat protectant! we love supernova moisture and shine cream or supernova blonde moisture and shine cream to condition, tame frizz, and heat protect before blow drying. another great option is the shield anti-humidity spray which shields hair from frizz, humidity, and heat and should be sprayed on strands before heat styling. feel free to double up and use both!
  5. next up is our new rising star volumizing finishing spray. Eric recommends generously spraying rising star to the roots, then blow drying upwards in an exaggerated motion to achieve maximum lift.
  6. if you want to go even higher, Eric typically bumps the root with a curling iron to lock in volume and hold. once you’ve nailed that lifted volume at the roots, use the chameleon 5 in 1 curling wand and wrap hair around barrel in 1” sections to create curls or waves.
  7. if an easy-yet-styled ponytail is the look you’re after, spray rising star onto the base of your ponytail to add bigger lift and body.
  8. to set your style, spritz un.done volume and matte spray for a messy-chic ‘do, and spray fluxus touchable hairspray all over to set the look.
